Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will oversee the development of the new banner for the popular digital effects company that the director co-founded to perform the effects of “Heavenly Creatures.”
Created in 1993 to perform the effects of Peter Jackson’s movie “Celestial Creatures”, the visual effects studio Weta Digital will prepare to create original content for the first time.
Everything will be done through its new division, Weta Animated , which will create animation works for both cinema and streaming platforms.
Jackson will be key in the process with his partner, writer and producer Fran Walsh, who will oversee the development of the new animation house and will be in charge of writing, producing and directing several animated projects.
Both are majority owners of the company that has been in charge of the effects of the Lord of the Rings saga , King Kong, Avatar, Game of Thrones and Avengers: Endgame , among others, and now they promise to seek to change the model of realization of animated movies.
“ We are huge fans of animated storytelling in all its forms, but it can be a long, long, and often expensive way to make movies . That is, in part, the reason we have created this company: to change the model and open doors for filmmakers and storytellers who otherwise would not have a chance to show what they can do , ”Jackson explained in a statement.
Prem Akkraju will be the CEO, based on his experience as co-founder of SR Labs , a technology company that had already made a significant investment in Weta during 2019 and which also involves Sean Parker , the entrepreneur known for his work in Napster and be the first president of Facebook.
